REFLECTION FOR THE ASCENSION OF JESUS

Mark 16:15-20

Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News to all creation

Today we celebrate Ascension Day, remembering Jesus’ journey to heaven after His life, death, and resurrection. Jesus had been with his disciples, he taught them all that He wanted to teach them. Before he ascended back to the Father, He commissioned the disciples to go and do what He had taught them, to make known the good news to all creation. Jesus is sending us as well, to go and proclaim the good news to all creation. Rowan Williams tells us that, the good news that Jesus is talking about, is good news about something that alters the ambiance in our lives, changing the affairs in our interactions, our potential and transforming our social life.

Mark tells us that; a cloud took him from the disciples’ sight. According to Exodus we remember very well that, a Cloud is a symbol of God’s presence. The Lord went in front of them in a pillar of a cloud by day, to lead them along the way Exodus 13:21. Then, the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle, Exodus 40:34. Similarly, a cloud took Jesus from the disciples and He went back to be with His Father. Although Jesus is not with us physically, He is still very close, strengthening and guiding us in the mission that he entrusted to us:

Going out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News to all creation.
